August 2024 campaign statements following BLS’s preliminary benchmark release.
What the evidence shows
BLS did issue a preliminary estimate that March 2024 payroll employment would be revised down by 818,000 on a not-seasonally-adjusted basis. Benchmarking is a scheduled annual procedure based largely on unemployment-insurance tax records. The final seasonally adjusted March 2024 revision was smaller, negative 589,000. No evidence establishes that the routine preliminary estimates were fabricated.
Misleading. The preliminary revision number was real; presenting it as final or proof of political fraud was not supported.
