What the evidence shows
NATO existed and operated through common budgets and national military expenditures before 2017. Allied defense spending rose after the 2014 Wales pledge and continued during Trump’s term; NATO leaders have credited Trump with pressure to increase spending, but the increases were national expenditures, not arrears paid into a depleted NATO account. Misleading. Increased allied spending is real and Trump’s pressure was one factor; the “no money” and delinquent-payment framing is wrong.
