Trump fact checks: Crime

Evidence and source-linked assessments of Donald Trump’s crime claims. Counts describe this selected catalogue, not all statements or every repetition.

Trump delivered the largest murder-rate drop ever recorded

The FBI reported an 18.1% murder-rate decline in 2025 to 4.1 per 100,000, tied with 1955 and 1956 for the lowest national estimate in its series; the numerical core is supported. But the national decline began in 2022 and continued through 2023 and 2024, before Trump returned to office. Crime researchers identify multiple local and national factors, so the data do not isolate the new administration as the cause.

Overall crime was at its lowest level in 125 years

The administration cited a homicide estimate rather than a comparable measure of all crime. Consistent national crime records do not support a 125-year comparison of overall crime.

Tim Walz ordered Melissa Hortman’s killing

Prosecutors treated the suspect’s allegation as unsubstantiated and did not link Walz to the shootings. A state-board appointment was not evidence that the governor ordered a murder.

TCT-FC-DEATH-PENALTYUnsupported

The death penalty is an established strong deterrent to murder

A National Research Council review found the research unable to establish whether executions increase, reduce or have no effect on homicide. Inconclusive evidence does not establish the strong preventive effect claimed.

Aurora was invaded and conquered by a Venezuelan gang

Aurora had real gang members, arrests, violence, and serious disorder at several distressed properties. City and police officials nevertheless said the gang had not taken over the city and described its influence as isolated. Later enforcement tied multiple suspects to TdA and the city pursued closure of troubled buildings, so “nothing happened” would also be inaccurate. “Invaded and conquered” converted documented criminal activity in a small area into a claim of citywide or institutional control.

Harris “let in” 13,099 convicted murderers during the Biden administration

ICE’s figure was real but described a different population: noncitizens with homicide convictions on its non-detained docket as of July 21, 2024. The docket spans decades and includes lawful entrants. DHS said the vast majority entered before the Biden administration, and some were incarcerated by other federal, state, or local authorities. “Non-detained” means not in ICE detention, not necessarily walking free. The underlying letter also did not say Harris personally admitted them.

“Migrant crime” was driving crime “through the roof”

“Migrant crime” is not an FBI offense category, and national crime data do not record immigration status. Available evidence contradicts the broader wave claim: FBI violent-crime estimates were declining, while status-specific Texas research found undocumented immigrants had substantially lower felony arrest rates than U.S.-born citizens. Longitudinal peer-reviewed research likewise found undocumented immigration was generally associated with decreasing violent crime. These population findings do not erase individual crimes; they rebut the asserted nationwide immigration-driven surge.

Haitian migrants in Springfield were eating residents’ pets

Springfield officials and police said there were no credible reports or substantiated claims of immigrants harming or eating pets. A separate Ohio incident involving a cat occurred in Canton, not Springfield, and the defendant was not a Haitian migrant. The Springfield population at issue included many Haitians lawfully present through temporary protected status or other processes, another reason not to describe the entire group as illegal entrants.

El Salvador’s homicide decline occurred because it sent murderers to the U.S.

El Salvador did report a major homicide decline, but it coincided with a sweeping domestic state-of-exception campaign and mass incarceration; its prison population increased dramatically. No evidence shows a government program of sending murderers to the United States. Thus the underlying decline was real while the stated cause was not.

Venezuelan crime fell 72% because Venezuela sent criminals to the U.S.

Venezuela does not publish sufficiently reliable national crime data to validate a 72% decline. The independent Venezuelan Observatory of Violence estimated a roughly 25% decline in violent deaths from 2022 to 2023. Experts cited population loss, economic conditions, and state violence among possible reasons. They found no evidence that Venezuela emptied prisons and sent their populations to the United States. The numeric and causal parts are both unsupported by the available evidence.

Countries are emptying prisons and mental institutions into the United States

Individual migrants can have criminal histories, and the 1980 Mariel boatlift included a small minority released from Cuban prisons or mental-health institutions. But Trump and his campaign did not provide evidence of a current, multi-country policy or flow. Immigration researchers and country experts queried by multiple outlets found no evidence of systematic dumping. Because comprehensive origin-country records do not exist, the defensible finding is unsupported rather than a claim that no such individual could ever have migrated.

“Many” people crossing under Biden were terrorists

CBP’s Terrorist Screening Dataset includes known or suspected terrorists plus affiliates and other people who may represent a threat; an encounter is not proof that the person is a terrorist. Watchlist encounters were rare relative to millions of border encounters, and many occurred at northern legal ports rather than between southwest ports. There is no official evidence that “many” unauthorized entrants were terrorists. Data cannot measure people never detected, so a zero-risk claim would also be unwarranted.
