Eliminating federal fraud would balance the budget

Even the high end of the cited annual fraud estimate, $521 billion, was less than one-third of the 2025 deficit. Eliminating it entirely would still leave a large budget gap.

“No tax on Social Security”

Public Law 119-21 did not repeal federal taxation of Social Security benefits. It created a temporary additional deduction for people age 65 and older, subject to income phaseouts; the deduction is available regardless of whether the taxpayer receives Social Security. Some seniors still owe tax on benefits, and some beneficiaries under 65 do not receive the deduction.

DOGE found “$160 billion worth of fraud, waste, and abuse”

DOGE’s $160 billion at the time was an “estimated savings” total spanning contract and grant cancellations, workforce changes, regulatory changes, asset sales, programmatic changes, and other categories. A canceled ceiling is not necessarily money that would have been spent, and “waste” is not synonymous with legally established fraud. GAO later found material errors and missing support in the receipt categories it audited; it did not validate $160 billion in fraud.

DOGE had saved $150 billion by the first 100 days

The $150 billion was DOGE’s own top-line estimate, not an audited reduction in outlays. In August 2026, GAO reviewed DOGE’s Wall of Receipts and found that many estimates used undisclosed or inconsistent methods, 96% of reported grant savings lacked enough information to verify the method, some leases were already being phased out, and a reported $1.7 billion contract saving reflected a contract on which no reduction occurred. GAO reported that the Wall ultimately listed $110 billion for contracts, grants, and leases as of July 7, 2026, while noting that the larger top-line DOGE total included other categories.

Eliminating “fraud, waste and theft” would defeat inflation and lower mortgages, car payments and groceries

Lower federal deficits can, all else equal, reduce aggregate demand and long-term rate pressure. But mortgage rates also reflect expected inflation, Federal Reserve policy, Treasury yields, credit risk, and market conditions; grocery prices depend on commodity, labor, energy, weather, disease, trade and supply chains. No published administration estimate tied verified DOGE savings to the enumerated price reductions, and CBO later estimated the 2025 reconciliation law would increase deficits.

Millions of people aged 150+ were receiving Social Security

SSA stated that the cited records were Social Security number records without a recorded date of death and were “not necessarily receiving benefits.” The SSA inspector general found 18.9 million numberholders born in 1920 or earlier without death information, but said almost none were receiving SSA payments; about 44,000 were in payment status at the review date, a group that includes some legitimate centenarians and cases requiring review. The database issue is real; the assertion that 1.3 million 150-year-olds were receiving benefits is not.

Trump endorsed considering a “DOGE dividend,” described as 20% of claimed savings

The $5,000 figure came from an outside proposal: if DOGE produced $2 trillion of savings, 20% distributed among roughly 79 million federal-income-tax-paying households would be about $5,000 per household. Trump endorsed considering the concept but did not say checks had been approved. No law appropriated a 2025 DOGE dividend, and no such checks were issued.

DOGE could cut federal costs by $2 trillion

Trump’s April 2025 ABC interviewer accurately noted that “the original promise was $2 trillion, went to $1 trillion”; Trump answered by claiming $150 billion saved. DOGE’s final Wall of Receipts update was January 1, 2026, and GAO reported $110 billion in claimed contract, grant, and lease savings as of July 7, 2026, with significant verification problems. Even DOGE’s broader claimed total was far below $2 trillion.
